To me, Scarlett Johansson will always be remembered for her roles in “Lost in Translation,” her powerful performances in “Jojo Rabbit” and “Marriage Story,” as well as for her action-packed portrayal as Black Widow. She effortlessly showcases her skills as a bonafide action star. In an upcoming movie on Amazon Prime Video, she will finally be equipped with the superpowers that her fellow Avengers possess.
Lucy will be available for streaming on March 16th. Directed by Luc Besson, known for The Fifth Element, it’s safe to say this movie won’t be your typical action film. Scarlett Johansson stars as the main character, a student in Taipei with a troublesome boyfriend. However, his issues go beyond just not doing chores or having a motorcycle – he gets her involved in drug smuggling, which is a major warning sign.
Carrying a concealed package of unknown substances in her abdomen, she is tasked with a mission in Europe. However, a mishap forces her to ingest the contents, causing her to develop extraordinary abilities, suppress her emotions, and embark on a solo quest for revenge.
So, they may not be categorized as superpowers per se, but what she’s exhibiting is essentially tapping into her full brain capacity, reminiscent of the movie “Limitless.” How else can we explain her ability to control objects with her mind, not feel pain, and freeze time? Desperate for understanding, she turns to the esteemed scientist Samuel Norman (played by Morgan Freeman) for guidance.
Prepare yourself for a non-stop thrill ride through the majority of this film, because once Lucy takes those drugs, she transforms into a fierce and unyielding force. The plot takes some unexpected turns later on, but I won’t give anything away. With 90 minutes of relentless action, I have to admit that I prefer this pace over drawn-out three-hour films. It’s a chaotic journey that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and as any good writer knows, it’s best to jump right into the story and wrap it up swiftly.
If you’re looking for a change from the usual action-packed movies, consider watching Lucy for a more thought-provoking experience. While critics may have mixed opinions about it with a 69% Rotten Tomatoes rating, it’s still a movie worth checking out, especially with Scarlett Johansson’s captivating performance. For something lighter, I highly recommend watching Lady Bird, which has recently been added to Prime Video and is one of my personal favorites.
